The Resort
Two countries, one lift pass, zero passport checks. Châtel is the Alps at their most charming: a chalet village in the Vallée d'Abondance, sitting so casually on the French-Swiss border that skiing into Switzerland for lunch counts as "popping next door". The local mountain has a split personality: Super-Châtel above the village for relaxed cruising, and the sportier Linga / Pré-la-Joux side for those who like their legs to file a complaint by 3 pm. Together that's 83 km of local pistes between roughly 1,100 and 2,200 m, with something for every level. Feeling greedy? The full Portes du Soleil pass unlocks one of the largest cross-border ski areas on the planet: over 500 km of pistes across 12 linked French and Swiss resorts, Avoriaz, Morgins and Torgon included. All the alpine charm, none of the fur-coat prices.
Lodging & Après-Ski
Home base is the 3-star Hotel Eliova L'Eau Vive, a cosy chalet with half board included, just about 100 m from the Linga lifts. That's roughly the distance from your croissant to your bindings, so "first lift" is less an ambition and more a default setting. Expect comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, a restaurant and bar perfectly positioned for post-piste debriefs (where every run gets 20% steeper in the retelling), ski storage, free Wi-Fi throughout, and a free shuttle into Châtel village centre when the après calls – and it will call. No glitz, no fuss: just a warm chalet exactly where skiers want to wake up, at the foot of the slopes.
